Compliance
Danish POS law and SAF-T — in plain English
Since 1 January 2024, many Danish restaurants, cafés and bars must use a digital sales registration system. Here's what that means for you.
Who is covered?
The requirement applies to businesses in certain sectors with an annual turnover of up to DKK 10 million. It's the actual operation — not the registered industry code — that decides whether you're covered.
- Restaurants and cafés
- Pubs, bars and nightclubs
- Pizzerias and grill bars
- Ice cream bars and similar
What does the law require of the POS system?
Digital registration of sales
Sales must be recorded in a digital sales registration system.
A journal that can't be changed
Transactions are digitally signed and chained, so any change can be detected.
SAF-T file on request
Data must be available to the Danish Tax Agency in SAF-T format for any chosen period.
Kept for five years
Data must be stored for at least five years from the end of the financial year.
Take the test: is your POS system ready?
Answer five questions. It takes less than a minute.
- 1. Is every sale — cash, card, MobilePay and gift cards — recorded in your POS system?
- 2. Does the system digitally sign transactions?
- 3. Is it impossible to edit or delete sales in the journal afterwards?
- 4. Can you generate a SAF-T file for any chosen period?
- 5. Is sales data kept for at least five years?
